Slitting Procurement: What Feeding Conditions to Specify Beyond Strip Width
Published
Ordering slit coils by width alone is often insufficient. Feeding direction, edge condition, coil receiving requirements and nesting all affect downstream stamping. This article explains how to include these conditions in an inquiry so procurement can state requirements clearly.
Connect the strip requirement with the part nesting
Longitudinal slitting divides coil into the required strip widths along its length. In addition to gauge and width, describe single- or multiple-row stamping, feeding arrangements and any drawing-defined material orientation.
This supports nesting and supply review; slitting does not arbitrarily change rolling direction. Provide an established nesting drawing, or begin with the part drawing and equipment acceptance conditions.
Specify edges and equipment acceptance together
Edge requirements may cover trimming, burr direction and checks specified by the drawing or process. Equipment acceptance concerns coil diameters, weight and winding orientation, as required by the actual line.
A strip of the correct width may still need a supply review if its coil cannot be accepted by the customer’s equipment. Include edges, coil conditions and packaging in the enquiry.
What to provide before nesting is final
Start with the part drawing, planned production method and known equipment conditions, marking strip width, nesting margins and other open items. Processing staff can then define supply requirements; purchasing need not invent values to complete a form.
Retain strip dimensions, drawings and process records for approved trials. Identify nesting or tooling changes on repeat orders rather than supplying only the previous slit width.
Is part width the slit-strip width?
Not necessarily. Strip width for continuous stamping depends on nesting, margins and process requirements; the part outline is only one input. Review an existing nesting drawing or provide the part and equipment conditions before defining slit width.

Coil slitting enquiry checklist
- Incoming coil: give the grade, thickness, master coil width and weight, and whether the coil is customer-supplied or needs sourcing.
- Slit sizes: list each target strip width with its coil count or weight and unit. If trim or knife layout matters, give the trim allowance and who keeps the edge scrap.
- Feeding and acceptance: give the receiver’s coil ID, OD, weight and winding direction limits, plus strip width, burr direction and edge requirements.
- Delivery: state the labelling and packing requirements for each size, shipment quantities, destination and requested arrival date.
