How to Inquire for a Multi-Material Chassis
When a chassis project uses cold-rolled covers, galvanized inner panels and stainless steel trim, the most common purchasing mistake is to mix the three materials in a lump-sum tonnage inquiry. This prevents the supplier from identifying which parts correspond to each material, surface condition and processing step, leading to missing or duplicated items in the quotation. It is advisable to build a list by part number: for each part, separately list the material series (cold-rolled, galvanized, stainless steel, etc.), surface requirements (such as coated, pickled, brushed), dimensions and quantity, and note whether the part requires leveling, slitting, laser cutting, CNC shearing or bending. Different materials are not interchangeable; for example, if the cover uses cold-rolled sheet and the inner panel uses galvanized sheet, they cannot be merged into one item just because the thickness is similar. The list should also distinguish raw material, blank and finished part: raw material is coil, blank is sheet after leveling or shearing, and finished part is the component after cutting and bending. Clarifying who is responsible for each stage reduces later communication costs.
Three material groups in one enclosure
An enclosure may combine cold-rolled outer panels, galvanized internal panels and stainless trim. List them as separate material groups. Define cutting, bending and coating for outer panels; holes, flanges and later finishing for internal panels; and texture, visible faces and protection for trim.
Identify requested operations by drawing. Do not assume galvanized parts receive no further coating or confuse an appearance requirement with a material designation. Specify stock, blanks or processed parts for each item.
Information the Customer Should Prepare
When preparing the list, the customer should provide drawings or detailed dimensioned drawings for each part, indicating material series, thickness, width and length (or coil weight), and surface condition requirements. If the part has bending or cutting features, key dimensions and tolerances should be noted on the drawing. In addition, state whether each part is purchased as raw material, blank or finished part, and whether leveling, slitting, laser cutting, CNC shearing or bending is required. This information directly affects the feasibility of processing coordination and the quotation structure. The reason is: the material series determines which type of coil to select, the surface condition determines whether coating or pickling is needed, and the processing step determines whether equipment coordination is required. Without this information, the supplier can only estimate by approximate tonnage, which may lead to rework or material waste. The customer should also specify the unit of quantity (piece, sheet, ton) and the delivery form (coil, sheet, strip) for consistent understanding.
Can different materials share one enquiry?
Yes. Use separate lines by material and part, retaining designation, surface, dimensions, drawing, quantity and processing scope. Do not combine different materials into an unspecified total merely because gauges match. Identical materials can be grouped while retaining quantities by drawing for quotation and receiving checks.
