Jiangsu Gaozhen Material Inquiry: One List That Clarifies Raw Material, Blank and Finished Part

When purchasing metal materials, mixing raw material, blanks and finished parts in one list can lead to inconsistent quotation targets. Using base sheet and cut blanks as an example, this article explains how to separate dimensions and responsibilities, and what information to prepare before inquiry.

First, Clarify Whether You Are Buying Sheet or Part

In the same project, base sheet and cut blanks are two delivery objects. Base sheet is delivered as coil or cut-to-length plate, with dimensions focusing on thickness, width, length, grade and condition; cut blanks are delivered to part outline, with dimensions focusing on cut contour, hole positions and edge requirements. If the list only says "process per drawing", the supplier cannot tell whether the quotation is for a full sheet or a cut blank. Purchasing should first confirm whether this item is material or a cut part, then decide whether the list states raw material specifications or part drawings. Mixing the two makes quotation bases easy to mismatch.

Process Sequence for a Bracket Blank

A bracket enquiry can separate supply dimensions from the drawing-cut profile. Specify designation, gauge, surface and quantity for the material. For blanks, include the component profile, holes and edge requirements. Define whether delivery is stock or a further processed blank against the drawing and agreed scope. Identify which cut-to-length, slitting, cutting or bending operations are requested rather than treating them as an automatic package.

Prepare Drawings and Specifications Separately Before Inquiry

Customers need to prepare two types of information: material specifications, including grade, thickness, width, length or coil weight, surface condition and quantity; and part information, including part drawings, cut contour, hole positions, edge requirements and blank quantity. The reason to prepare them separately is that quotation objects differ: material specifications correspond to base sheet or coil, while part drawings correspond to cut blanks. If only a finished part drawing is provided, the supplier cannot work backward to base sheet dimensions and nesting method, nor judge cutting allowance. Keeping the material list and part list separate, and stating at inquiry which item is delivered as sheet and which as blank, makes communication much more direct.

Can a Quotation Be Made Directly from a Part Photo Only?

Usually not. A part photo lacks dimensions, grade, thickness, quantity, cut contour and edge requirements, so the base sheet specification and processing steps cannot be determined, and an executable quotation cannot be formed. A photo can be used for preliminary discussion of part shape, but formal inquiry still requires a part drawing or dimensioned sketch, along with material specifications and quantity. If no drawing is available yet, at least state the approximate shape, key dimensions, material grade and required quantity, then confirm whether delivery as blank is needed. Only then can the supplier judge whether the quotation corresponds to base sheet or cut blank.
