How to Prepare Drawings and a Material List for Laser-Cut Steel Plate Quotes
Published
Before requesting a laser-cutting quote for steel plate, aligning part drawings, material list and downstream steps reduces back-and-forth. This article explains how drawings and lists work together, what information to add, and gives a direct answer to a common question.
Match Drawings with the List Before Asking for a Quote
For a laser-cutting quote, sending only a part drawing or only a material list is not enough. The drawing defines the shape to cut; the list defines which plate, surface condition and quantity. If the two do not match, the processor has to ask back and the quote is delayed. A practical approach: give each part drawing a drawing number, and in the list match that number to the coil grade, surface condition and quantity, noting whether the part is cut to final shape or as a blank. If bending follows, mark bend lines and hole/slot positions on the drawing so the processor can judge cutting sequence and allowance. Dimensions, holes and contours must be legible; do not replace formal drawings with screenshots.
From Drawing to Cut Blank for a Bracket Plate
Take a bracket plate: the drawing shows the outer contour, four mounting holes and one long slot; the material list specifies cold-rolled coil, coated surface, quantity twenty. The processor first finds the matching coil from the list, decoils or slits it into sheets suitable for cutting, then programs the cut by drawing number. If holes and slots are close to a bend line, confirm the bend direction first to avoid hole distortion after bending. The list should state whether cut parts are blanks or finished parts; blanks only guarantee contour and holes/slots, while later bending and deburring are separate. This example shows: the drawing gives shape, the list gives material and quantity, and the processing sequence follows from both.
What the Customer Should Prepare and Why
The customer should prepare three things: first, part drawings with drawing numbers, marking contours, holes/slots, bend lines and key dimensions; second, a material list stating coil grade, surface condition, thickness, quantity, and whether the input is raw material, blank or finished part; third, downstream process notes, such as whether bending or deburring is needed. The reason is simple: laser cutting is one step in the chain, and cutting parameters and allowances depend on surface condition and downstream steps. Stating coated or pickled surface in the list helps the processor judge whether surface protection is needed during cutting. Write quantities by drawing number on separate lines, not combined, for easy item-by-item checking. If drawings are revised, note the version number to avoid cutting from old drawings.
Which to Send First: Drawing or List?
send both at the same time and link them by drawing number. With drawings only, the processor does not know which coil and surface to use; with the list only, the shape is unknown. When sending together, each drawing number in the list corresponds to one line of material information, and drawing file names carry the drawing number for quick checking. If drawings are not final, you may send the list and a sketch to ask about material scope, but a formal quote still waits for confirmed drawings. This arrangement saves a round of back-and-forth during inquiry.
