Re-inquiring After a Drawing Revision: Which Material Details Need Updating
Published
When a revised drawing triggers a new inquiry, the old material list may no longer match. This article explains how to mark drawing numbers and revisions, state what changed, and keep technical confirmation separate from delivery discussions.
Why the Old Inquiry Cannot Simply Be Reused
Forwarding an old email leaves the supplier looking at the previous version of the bracket. When holes or bend lines change, the grade, thickness, blank size and cut profile may change too, while the old list stays the same. Buyers should recheck three things: which drawing revision the quote covers, which items changed, and which remain unchanged. Putting the drawing number, revision and a short change summary at the top of the inquiry tells the supplier which document to work from. Keep technical changes separate from delivery and quantity so a revision is not mistaken for permission to delay.
What Changes on the List When a Bracket Gets New Holes
Take a cold-rolled steel bracket that had two mounting holes and now has four, with one bend line adjusted. The list should update at least: drawing number and revision, grade and thickness, blank size, hole positions and diameters, bend line locations and count, and surface treatment. If the material was bought as decoiled sheet, confirm the new blank still fits the decoiling range; if laser cutting or CNC bending is involved, state that the new drawing governs the profile and bend sequence. Do not copy allowances or blank sizes from the old list, since new holes can change nesting. Number the changed items so the supplier can check them one by one.
What to Prepare Before Inquiring, and Why
Prepare a revision-marked drawing, a list with changed items flagged, and a statement of whether you want raw material, blank or finished part quoted. The reason is practical: a trading and processing coordinator needs to know the boundary, whether supplying coil only or also arranging decoiling, slitting, cutting and bending. State quantities as single pieces, small batches or releases, and say whether lead time starts after change confirmation or from a fixed date. If hole positions or bend radii are still open, settle them internally before sending, so the supplier does not quote on guesses. Keep technical questions and commercial questions in separate emails or sections for clearer replies.
How should an earlier quotation be reviewed after a revision?
Send the revised drawing and change note to the supplier to review affected material and processing items and identify which quotation conditions still apply. The parties should confirm validity rather than assuming everything changes or everything remains. Reference the approved drawing revision and quotation when ordering.
