How to Distinguish Finished Part Dimensions from Coil Dimensions Before Cut-to-Length Processing

When buying cut-to-length sheets, buyers often confuse finished part dimensions with original coil dimensions. This article explains how to express cut length, unfolding, allowances, and quantity to help you state requirements accurately.

Distinguish Finished Part Dimensions from Original Sheet Dimensions

Before cut-to-length processing, distinguish two dimensions: finished part dimensions and original sheet dimensions. Finished dimensions are the actual dimensions after part processing; original sheet dimensions are the uncut sheet dimensions after leveling. For example, for a multi-length mounting plate, the length marked on the drawing is the finished length. If you order cut-to-length directly by finished length, the subsequent cutting allowance may be insufficient. The correct approach is to provide finished dimensions, cutting method, and allowance requirements, and let the processor calculate the cut-to-length length. If the sheet will be cut after delivery, state in the inquiry that 'the sheet will be cut to finished dimensions after leveling' and give the dimensions and quantity after cutting.

Listing installation plates with different lengths

For installation plates of several lengths, list counts by finished profile and identify further trimming, hole-making or bending. Separate stock and finished sizes for intermediate material. If ordering cut-to-length flat parts directly, agree their finished dimensions and inspection requirements.

Allowances follow the process plan rather than a uniform length addition. Include stock form, flatness and edges when discussing cut lengths and later operations.

What Customers Need to Prepare and Why

Customers need to prepare: 1) finished drawings or dimension lists indicating each length, width, and quantity; 2) cutting method (e.g., laser cutting, CNC shearing) and allowance requirements; 3) flatness requirements; 4) material grade and specifications. The reason is: cut-to-length length must be derived from finished dimensions and cutting method; insufficient allowance leads to undersized finished parts; cutting method affects allowance size and flatness requirements; flatness requirements affect the choice of leveling process. With this information, the processor can accurately calculate cut-to-length dimensions and material usage, avoiding rework or material waste caused by dimension confusion.

Can a flat part be delivered directly after cut-to-length processing?

Some can, when agreed dimensions, flatness, edges and other requirements are met. Parts with holes, complex profiles or machining need the corresponding later operations. Specify the delivery stage to establish whether cut-to-length material remains an intermediate product.
