Rectangular Blanks for CNC Shearing: Specifying Dimensions and Edge Requirements

When purchasing rectangular blanks for CNC shearing, clarify finished part vs. intermediate blank, length/width orientation, edge requirements, and subsequent operations; state quantity by piece or weight to streamline processing coordination.

Distinguish Finished Parts from Intermediate Blanks

For rectangular cover plates or long strip liners, first state whether the item is a finished part for direct use or an intermediate blank that will undergo bending, welding, or machining. If finished, specify dimensions and edge requirements according to the final drawing; if intermediate, allow machining allowance and mark “blank” in the inquiry. For example, a rectangular cover plate that will later be CNC bent should have its blank length and width based on the unfolded bending dimensions, not the finished outline. This ensures the correct profile is cut during processing coordination and avoids dimensional mismatches.

Describe orientation and edges separately

Mark long and short edges and installation orientation on a sketch. Identify any rolling-direction requirement from the drawing and show appearance texture requirements separately.

Specify deburring and later machining at the relevant edges. For covers requiring bending, show the relationship between developed and formed geometry and have the process owner review blanks and allowances.

State Quantity by Piece or by Weight Upfront

Rectangular blanks are commonly quantified in two ways: by piece count or by weight. Piece count suits parts with a fixed assembly quantity, such as 20 cover plates for an equipment panel; weight suits scenarios where material consumption is the basis, such as long strip liners priced per kilogram. When inquiring, provide single-piece dimensions, piece count, and theoretical weight together, or state “delivery by weight, single-piece dimensions for reference.” This helps processing coordination decide whether to level by sheet count or convert weight to pieces. Writing only “need a batch” can lead to disputes in counting and weighing later. Also, if the blank has orientation requirements (e.g., long edge along grain), note them alongside the quantity to avoid mixed material.

Can a sheared part be delivered as a finished part?

It can, as agreed against the drawing. A rectangular flat part may be accepted in its sheared condition. Holes, complex profiles, mating faces or bends need their defined operations. Identify the delivery object and acceptance requirements rather than treating an operation name as the definition of a finished component.
