301 is an austenitic stainless steel with a pronounced work-hardening response, making it relevant to elastic components and strip rerolling. Distinguish annealed stock for further rerolling from strip already ordered to a hardness or mechanical-property condition for clip manufacture. They enter production at different stages and require different acceptance criteria.

Clamping force also depends on gauge, geometry and working travel and cannot be inferred from the 301 designation alone. Work backwards from the finished part to the required material condition and blanking and bending route before fixing stock dimensions.

Clip Part Material and Processing

For clips made from strip in a specified hard condition, check blanked edges, bending and springback in that condition. Burr orientation affects contact, and bends should be trialled against the material condition and drawing. Record stock strength or hardness separately from finished clamping force and travel.

Rerolling is a different route: define the target strip gauge and condition, then discuss incoming dimensions and surface requirements before arranging component manufacture from suitable strip. A finished blanked and bent clip should not be treated as ordinary flat strip for further rolling.

Order Condition and Test Agreement

List the grade, delivery condition, gauge and width tolerances, edges and surface requirements separately for 301. Identify later rerolling where applicable; for direct clip manufacture, identify blanking, bending and finished inspection items. Keep stock and finished-part test data in separate fields.

Coil and cut sheet differ in nesting and feeding, so choose against equipment and quantity. Record material batch and sampling stage for trials and check production stock against the agreed items. Changes in hardness condition or gauge require renewed confirmation of tooling and clamping tests.

Is 301 Always Non-Magnetic?

301 is austenitic stainless steel, but after work hardening it may exhibit some magnetism, so magnetism cannot be used as a basis for material identification. Purchasing acceptance should rely on material documents or test reports to identify grade and condition; magnetism is only a reference phenomenon and is not used to judge whether the material is acceptable.
